From the hill town of Ausonia down through olive groves and vineyards to a family cantina, tasting the valley's wine as we go.
Ausonia sits on a hill in southern Lazio, halfway between Rome and Naples, in a valley of olive groves and small family vineyards that most visitors to Italy never find. We meet in Piazza Mercato in the centre of town and walk down past the medieval sanctuary of Santa Maria del Piano and out into the countryside. At a local cantina the family who make the wine pour their reds and whites alongside bread, their own olive oil, cheese and salumi, and tell you how it is made. About four hours with an easy walk of around 5 km, mostly downhill on the way out — transport back up to the piazza is included. Tastings and food included. Coming soon.
