Gothic Quarter Walking Tour

About this walk

Two thousand years in two and a half hours. We meet on Plaça Reial, climb into the Barri Gòtic by the cathedral, work through the Barri Gòtic — Plaça del Rei, Plaça Sant Felip Neri, the old Jewish quarter — and finish near the sea. Narrow streets, deep shade, and a lot of history that the guidebooks flatten out.

   Plaça Reial

   We meet under the arches, then duck into the old city.

   Barcelona Cathedral

   Thirteen geese in the cloister, one for each year of Eulàlia’s life.

   Plaça del Rei

   Where Columbus reported back. Probably.

   Plaça Sant Felip Neri

   The shrapnel marks are from 1938. Nobody has filled them in.

   El Call — the Jewish quarter

   One of the oldest synagogues in Europe, down a lane you would walk past.

   Santa Maria del Mar

   Built by the porters of the port, in fifty-five years flat.
